I was approached by author and friend, Violet Anderson to design the cover for her second book, The Story of My Dad. From the beginning, Ms. Anderson had a strong concept for the book which made for a fun collaborative project. She requested that the cover consist of a tropical scene with palm trees which represented her family origins from Jamaica. She also wanted the colors of yellow and brown to be used on the cover as they were her father's favorite colors.
I decided to illustrate the tropical scene by painting the image in photoshop. I chose to focus only on the leaf portion of the palms to give a more abstract feel to the cover. This also allowed the leaves to direct the readers eye to the title of the book. A simple sans serif typeface was chosen for the title to match the serene feel of the image and the yellow type worked as a nice contrast against the blue sky and sea.
I also created a flyer and poster to help promote the book. The same imagery, type selection and color choices from the book were also used in the flyer and poster for consistency across the three printed materials.
